Postcard: Do Not Use This Font

Do Not Use This Font

I received this postcard in the mail yesterday. I’m now trying to decide whether I could hang it over the baptistry at church. On the back was a simple message:

Thought this might amuse you!
love Hedge x

It did. Thanks, Hedge!

The Non-Designer\'s Design Book

I’m quite picky about my fonts, and about design in general. One of the best (and most accessible) books I’ve ever read on design for DTP publications is The Non-Designer’s Design Book (Second Edition): Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice by Robin Williams (No, not that one!).

The book is easy to read, easy to understand, and the principles contained in it easy to apply. Williams boils down good design to four main principles, which have the memorable acronym CRAP:

  • Contrast
  • Repetition
  • Alignment
  • Proximity

It’s a great book: I thoroughly recommend it.

And for all you font anoraks out there, the font used on the postcard looks like “Elementary Bold”.
