Strange Maps

Map of the world showing on what side of the road people drive.

I love maps, so it was with some delight that I came across this fascinating blog: Strange Maps.

I discovered it as it is referenced on Dynamic Diagrams’ blog Information Design Watch; dD were the information architecture (IA) company with whom we worked very successfully on the IA phase of our website redesign project.

The above map, for example, shows which side of the road people drive on around the world, with the key being:

Dark blue: drives on left (mainly British ex-colonies).
Light blue: used to drive on right, now on left (Namibia).
Purple: used to have mixed system, now drives on right.
Light red: used to drive on left, now on right.
Dark red: drives on right.

I also particularly like the post entitled A Diagram of the Eisenhower Interstate System, but the site has so many other wonderful diagrams that it’s hard to choose a favourite. Look out for the map of where pigs are most concentrated around the world.
